Extinguisher hydrostatic test and 6-year maintenance dates
Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers with steel shells, and halon units, get a hydrostatic test every 12 years and an internal maintenance every 6 years. CO₂, water, foam, wet chemical and stainless-steel dry chemical units are hydro tested every 5 years. Count from the year of manufacture, or from the last hydrostatic test.
The intervals
- 12-year hydro and 6-year maintenance: dry chemical stored pressure (mild steel or brazed shells), halon
- 5-year hydro: carbon dioxide, water and antifreeze, wetting agent, AFFF foam, dry chemical in stainless steel, wet chemical (Class K, per NFPA 10)
- Every year: annual maintenance; every month: a visual inspection
OSHA 1910.157 lists the hydrostatic intervals in Table L-1 and requires 6-year maintenance for stored-pressure dry chemical units that need a 12-year hydro. The NFPA 10 edition your fire code adopted and the manufacturer’s manual have the details.
Common questions
Does a hydro test restart the 6-year clock?
Yes. The 6-year maintenance is counted from the last hydrostatic test, or from manufacture if there hasn’t been one.
Can Stampario remind me?
Each unit row on the extinguisher report has a next-hydro year, and the yearly inspection lands on your call list.
